SHOWS March 30 thru April 5:
Bela Fleck is known to many as the world's premier banjo player who has virtually reinvented the image and sound of the banjo through a remarkable performing and recording career that has taken him all over the musical map and on a range of solo projects and collaborations. Those familiar with Bela know that he just loves to play the banjo and put it in unigue settings to prove its versatility as a musical instrument. Hooked on the sounds and style of Earl Scruggs, he picked up his first banjo at age 15, took lessons from Erik Darling, Mark Horowitz and Tony Trischka and began a musical career that has included playing in numberous bands such as the New Grass Revival and the Flecktones, collaborations with musical greats such as Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor, Pat Flynn, John Cowan, Tony Rice, John Hartford and numerous others, and the multiple genres of folk, bluegrass, jazz and classical music.
Bela has been nominated for 30 Grammy Awards and won 15 in more categories than any instrumentalist in Grammy history. In 2013, he joined forces with his wife, clawhammer banjoist and singer Abigail Washburn, for a very banjo-centric recording and touring project. Their debut album, Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn, took home the 2016 Grammy for Best Folk Album.
Bela's collaborations with Edgar Meyer began a journey into the world of classic music resulting in his first stand-alone banjo concerto, The Impostor, which he has performed worldwide over 40 times
Listen to one of the shows above as Bela talks to Steve about his latest project, the Juno Concerto, his experiences scoring this second work for orchestra and efforts to make it his best work yet plus some reflections on the Flecktones and other past endeavors.
Filled with great music, stories and interviews with legends past, present and those becoming..........
