Shows W.B September 24th: KEN IRWIN
In 1970, with only their passionate enthusiasm for American roots music lighting the way, three Boston, MA. college students, Ken Irwin, Bill Nowlin, and Marian Leighton Levy, cast their lot into the perilous music industry. "Before founding Rounder, we were basically music fans," says Rounder Records co-founder Ken Irwin. Yet this untested trio went the distance: from humble beginnings almost 47 years ago, to what is now America's premier independent record label. From its early interest in rural American music (via fiddle, stringband, blues, and bluegrass recordings) to an expansive catalogue of more than 3,000 titles running the gamut from Rock to Bluegrass, folk to world, soul to socas, jazz to juju, Cajun to Celtic and beyond, Rounder has emerged as the preeminent source for vital uncompromised music of all genres.
At the center of it all have been the overriding ideals of presenting good important music, trying to spread the word about that music to the broadest audience possible while staying energized by doing work of real value, and truly contributing something of real significance to the broader culture. It is a vision shared, respected and appreciated by music lovers around the globe, and a vital influence on the vast independent music community that has sprung up since Rounder's founding and commitment to good music and doing the best job they can for the artists they represent.
October 12, 2017 marks 47 years of Rounder Records making music. Join Steve during one of the show times above as he chats with Rounder co-founder, Ken Irwin, in part 1 of a 2 part interview recorded at this year's Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival. Ken shares stories about the early years at Rounder Records, how they got started and some of those first artists and early successes. Fascinating history.
